Gioura or Ancient Gerontia, is a large gray rock that comes out of the deep blue waters.
It has an area of only 11 sq.km and its shores are steep and rocky. Its highest peak is 570 meters and in its largest area is covered by oaks, macchia and phrygana. Completely in peace with this environment are the rare ibex, a species of goat that is considered wild.
The island can be approached only from a small cove at the southwest of the island. You will find it out by a small iconostasis, a tribute to a monk of Mount Athos who lived and was alone for the last years of his life on the island. From there begins a steep path to the cave of Cyclops and the church of Evangelistria.
Also famous in Gioura is the cave of the Cyclops, where according to the legend lived the Cyclops Polyphemus, who was blinded by Odysseus.
From there begins a steep path to the cave of Cyclops and the church of Evangelistria. The cave is located at an altitude of 150 m on the south side, its entrance faces the sea, it is wide and leads to a big room 40 X 50 meters and 15 m high.
The decoration in the cave is as rich as the archeological findings found there.
On the west coast, remains of a temple, probably dedicated to the god Poseidon, were found, at a spot where there is only one anchorage, at the site of the Platania spring.
On the north of the island, there is the amazing beach of Pnigmenos, N39 ° 24.132 'E24 ° 10.924', (which in greek means “drowned” due to a monk who was found drowned at the beach), with white sand and white marble pebbles. On the left side of the beach there is a cave with natural shade almost all day, where also water gushes out of the caves’ cracks.
Last but not least, from Pnigmenos beach the view of Psathoura, with its lonely lighthouse, is something that remains unforgettable to the eye!
The island has another beach "Liadromitiko", N39 ° 23.657 'E24 ° 09.662’, very small in size but enchanting with white pebbles.
